On May 13th, 2015 the new data center of the Lehmann Center and the second stage of the high performance computing center (HRSK-II) were inaugurated. In the official ceremony, Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka (Federal Minister for Education and Research), Stanislaw Tillich (Minister President of Saxony), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Müller-Steinhagen (Rector of TU Dresden), Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Nagel (Director of ZIH) and Prof. Dr. Arndt Bode (Director of Leibniz Supercomputing Center, Munich) pointed out the importance of state-of-the-art supercomputing facilities for excellent research. The scientific colloquium covered the challenges of high performance computing from a computer science standpoint and from the perspective of the main users. In his presentation “A Lab inside the cluster: the unlimited possibilities of computational materials design”, Prof. Dr. Cuniberti addressed the role and possibilities as well as the needs and expectations towards high performance computing for Coputational Materials Science. Currently, more than 70 % of the usage of the high performance computing resources at TU Dresden are used for materials simulations.
